According to experts, the perfect temperature for a good night's sleep is 18.3 degrees Celsius. To be very exact. But, if you struggle to maintain that perfect equilibrium, don't despair. Because John Lewis is on a mission to help you feel comfortable, whether you tend to run hot or cold at night.

From those big investment purchases – we're talking the best mattress and bed frame – to the everyday essentials, including cooling pillows and cosy duvets, you can get everything you need for some quality shut-eye in one shop.

And to help you find the best John Lewis bedding buys for you, we've rounded up the Good Housekeeping Institute's top tested products – all reviewed in the lab and tried night after night by our panellists at home. For those more subjective buys (read: cosy throws and covers), we've also added our editors' favourite picks below.

All prices quoted are for UK doubles unless otherwise specified.

Thanks to the cotton cover, it's also naturally breathable – combined with the 10.5 togs, this makes it a great year-round option. Score: 90/100

A mattress is a big investment so you want to keep it protected from staining and damage. That's where the best mattress protectors come in and this one impressed our experts in testing. It adds a layer of cushioning and the elasticated skirt ensures a secure (if snug) fit.

The anti-allergy design was popular with our sensitive sleepers, helping to minimise sniffles from allergens at night. Note, this one doesn't offer waterproof protection so you'll still need to be careful to avoid spills, but it's a good option for anyone with allergies and offers comfort and quality.

John Lewis Natural Collection British Wool Fleece Mattress Topper, White

Natural Collection British Wool Fleece Mattress Topper, White

We are big fans of mattress toppers at the Good Housekeeping Institute. They can be used to revive an older mattress, or just add an extra layer of delicious, sink-in comfort. And they don't come much more indulgent than this fleece design.

Yes, it's expensive but it's a lot less than buying a whole new mattress. Made from wool, it's also naturally anti-bacterial and temperature regulating, while the fleecy layer makes things extra cosy. Another year-round winner.

John Lewis Warm & Cosy Plain Brushed Cotton Bedding - Super King

Warm & Cosy Plain Brushed Cotton Bedding - Super King

They had us at 'warm and cosy'. This stylish bedding has been brushed after weaving, which means it's velvety soft to the touch and has a warm feel. Note that because of the brushed finish, some pilling can occur, but washing should help to remove any loose fibre.

While this pretty blue colourway is sold out in some sizes, you can shop a double for £40 in a latte shade, while singles and king size options are available in white and dove grey.

John Lewis Climate Control 3-in-1 Duvet ,13 5 Tog (4 5 + 9 Tog)

Climate Control 3-in-1 Duvet ,13 5 Tog (4 5 + 9 Tog)

We haven't had a chance to test this duvet in the Good Housekeeping Institute lab yet, but we're looking forward to snuggling up with it. The three-in-one design makes it a true all-seasons duvet. In the warmer months, you can sleep with just the 4.5 tog layer, swapping to the 9 tog option when it gets cooler and then combining both for a very cosy 13.5 togs in winter.

With dual action technology, it's also designed to regulate your body temperature, while the Temperate® fibre filling wicks away any moisture to keep you sleeping comfortably. We love a versatile buy.

Why trust the Good Housekeeping Institute

best led face masks

We test hundreds of sleep products every year in our Good Housekeeping Institute lab and with our reader panel at home. And we do it more rigorously than anywhere else.

To review mattresses, we send them out to our panel to sleep on night after night before giving us detailed feedback on the level of support it provided, whether they were disturbed by fidgeting partners, whether it helped alleviate any aches or pains and if they would recommend it to family and friends.

We also survey our reader panel about each mattress brand to find out how the products perform over time (whether it dips, for example) – they have to have owned their mattress for over six months.

For other bedding, such as sheets, mattress toppers, protectors, duvets and pillows, we put them through stringent wash tests in our lab, checking for any colour fading (where applicable), and seeing if they live up to any protective claims. We also check sheets and duvet covers fit well on our test mattress.

Finally, we assess quality throughout, before analysing all the data and awarding a final score.
