I adored Waiting for Doggo by Mark Mills. The book's hero is an endlessly loveable mutt who helps his owner to sort out his love life. I read it just after I got my first dog, a gorgeous Welsh Terrier called Brewster, earlier this year.

The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle is the wisest book I've ever read. Its fascinating premise is that human beings make themselves and others unnecessarily miserable by telling themselves the wrong stories.

Coming From Behind by Howard Jacobson is a novel that I felt must have been written especially for me. It's the story of a bright but bitter young man who has had his hopes raised by a Cambridge education and is finding it difficult to adjust to a life of mediocrity. It's savagely funny and has me weeping with laughter every time I reread it.

I discovered the poems of Edna St Vincent Millay while I was supposed to be studying TS Eliot and Ezra Pound at university. Their work didn't really speak to me. Edna, on the other hand, wrote brilliantly witty, moving poems that achieved the perfect balance between head and heart and made me feel less alone.
