Claudia Winkleman has brought back black leggings – here's my winning pair from M&S, plus 9 others

One thing I’ve learned as a fashion journalist is that sometimes the chicest outfits are made up of the most pared-back pieces. Classic blazers, trousers and shirts are some of the easiest and most stylish staples to incorporate into your wardrobe. But what if I told you that the chicest piece of all could actually be the most casual key item you could own?

To my surprise, a classic pair of black leggings is the answer to a practical yet stylish wardrobe this season. Yes, you read that right: the stretchy and seriously comfortable staple has become a fail safe option for any occasion, as proven by Claudia Winkleman. Although we’ve only seen two episodes so far, The Celebrity Traitors host has already worn a plethora of stylish pieces – which we have already begun to thoroughly dissect here at GH), but her most talked-about outfit featured a pair of basic black leggings by shapewear brand Spanx. Which, of course, I have included below.

But Claudia Winkleman’s favourite pair of leggings aren’t the only pair worth talking about. My personal favourite comes courtesy of M&S, who stocks a pair that A) are made from comfortable cotton for cosy wear, B) designed in a high-waisted, flattering fit, and C) comes in a two-pack. Oh, and did I mention that they are stocked in sizes 6 to 24 in varying lengths? Boden stocks a similar pair in equally soft cotton.

If, however, you’re looking for something especially versatile, opt for a pair of sleek, black gym leggings for an adaptable touch. Uniqlo’s Airism Soft Leggings are a brilliant pair, designed with moisture-wicking properties perfect for day-to-day wear (and evening wear, depending on where you are going) and come with pockets for added functionality. Likewise, H&M have a great pair made with Drymove fabric and come in ten (yes, ten) different colours.

When it comes to styling, there’s a simple way to make a pair of trusted black leggings look especially elegant. The key here is to pair them with something more, well, elevated. An oversized shirt in a bright pink or blue would do just the trick. Alternatively, a black satin blazer with jewelled or pearl embellishments comes straight from The Claudia Winkleman School of Fashion. And don’t forget a pair of kitten heels for that extra touch of sophistication.
