Super-chic and endlessly wearable - Jigsaw's new-in section defines investment dressing for the year ahead
Jigsaw currently has every piece you'll need to dress for the return to polished chic
I’ve always had a soft spot for Jigsaw. I got into it in the late noughties when Louise Trotter – currently the toast of Milan fashion week after her debut at Bottega Veneta – was creative director, and their flagship store in Covent Garden was the place to see and be seen.
I’d save up to buy one piece a year; a proper wool jumper, a coat and famously, if you’re one of my friends, a pair of high-waist leather trousers I wore until they fell apart.
I hadn’t looked at Jigsaw for a good year when, a couple of weeks ago, I kept finding myself drawn into their new-in section, spying piece after Jigsaw piece that was spot on in its shape, colour and styling for both this season and next.
To me, Jigsaw has always been about quality, good design and timelessness, and while their new-in section for autumn has this in abundance, this time around it has something extra – an elevated fashion edge that feels sharp, polished, considered and super-chic. Full of pieces to build a wardrobe with longevity.
If there is one thing I know – we’re in the midst of a return to chic, making it an ideal time to invest in good quality items.
After years in laid-back shapes, we are leaning toward proper, well-made clothes again. Items we can invest in now are blazers, wool coats, tailored trousers, elegant skirts, shapely dresses and comment-worthy jumpers and tops in shades including navy, claret, khaki, charcoal and dark denim.
If you’re feeling this too, I have made this edit to satisfy your needs. This curation features all the standout pieces worthy of your attention if you are looking to build a wardrobe to see you through the next few years.
Each of the items in this edit is a head-turner in a subtle but fabulous way. The sort of pieces your friends will do a double-take on because the quality, cut and styling rise way above usual high street fare.
The belted denim Lyocell dress is a one-and-done wonder that will have you looking stylish as soon as you put it on. The shade of burgundy in the wool coat is spot on, as is the khaki in the knitted rollneck and midi skirt combo that looks excellent with their bestselling, knee-high riding boots.
Oh, and a special mention to the grey Overlap Seam Detail Skirt; a wardrobe hero in the making.
My favourite piece, though, is the tailored, denim-panelled jacket. A denim jacket, yes, but also a style statement that will dress up the most casual pieces. It’ll also work under an overcoat, give your body shape and help you feel put-together.
If you want to rebuild the basics of your new, chic wardrobe, I’ve also included some classics. A Ponte, single-braced jacket, a ruffle-fronted blouse and multi-button cardigan will make you feel stylish now, and you’ll still be wearing all of them in a few years, too. Definitely worth the investment.
