We've done the research – here are the leather jackets to know, and how to find your signature style
It’s a classic, you can’t go wrong
A leather jacket is a wardrobe workhorse that’s always worth the investment; it never goes out of style. Season after season, year after year, it remains one of the most versatile pieces you can add to your wardrobe. Throw it over almost any outfit formula and it will instantly add a touch of noughties grunge to an otherwise simple look.
That being said, not all leather jackets are made equal. And by that, we mean styles now extend far beyond your classic biker. There’s a huge variety to choose from across the high street, be it a bomber jacket, a longline trench, or a blazer (we even found a cape). We promise one thing: you’ll find a match made in leather heaven, depending on your unique style, of course.
If you prefer to keep your outfit slightly more polished, you might want to opt for something more sophisticated, say, a leather blazer. Albaray, for instance, stocks an excellent real leather version that features single-breasted, button-down detailing. Alternatively, choose River Island’s avant-garde version, complete with a gold, asymmetric button for a modern touch.
If you like to keep in line with the trends and would consider your style ‘cool-girl’, look to Jaeger. Their real leather bomber jacket, with its sharp collar and boxy fit, strikes the perfect balance between cool and polished. Or, for a budget-friendly alternative, Next offers a beautiful faux-leather version in chocolate brown — one of our favourite shades this season.
This year, Parisian chic has begun to dominate our wardrobes. If you find the French city has heavily influenced your rotation, then choose a longline leather trench. Try layering New Look’s version over a maxi slip dress, paired with some kitten heels. Très chic, non?
And for wardrobes that adopt a grunge style, you can’t go wrong with a classic biker. Mango’s faux version will always look good teamed with a simple boxy white tee and jeans, not forgetting a classic pair of biker boots with subtle silver studding.
Alternatively, River Island’s leather cape is a real conversation starter. Button up the collar and you’re ready to swish through the streets.
