More and more retailers are switching to artificial music, as it is completely royalty-free and thus cheaper. The choice seems logical for retailers who are watching their margins, but is another blow for artists.

The Belgian DIY chain Brico and some Belgian Carrefour stores play royalty-free music in their stores via an AI-driven music library, tailored to the desired atmosphere in each store. French supermarket group Carrefour plans to switch completely to AI music between 2026 and 2028.
