Walmart is opening the first stores under its own brand name in the South African market by the end of this year. The American retail giant was already present there as stakeholder in Massmart, but now wants to use the fame of its name.
From Massmart to Walmart
Walmart has been present in South Africa since 2011 through a majority stake in Massmart, the operator of formats such as Game and Jumbo Cash & Carry, but those chains have struggled with declining sales and fierce competition from local players such as Shoprite and Pick n Pay in recent years.
