British supermarket chain Waitrose is testing a smart shopping trolley that uses AI to recognise products as customers place them in their trolley. The customer’s total amount is immediately updated, but there are also significant benefits for the chain itself.
Small-scale trial
A small-scale trial in Bracknell (near Reading) allows customers to attach a device with a screen to a standard Waitrose shopping trolley. They then scan the bar codes of their products and place them in the trolley, where cameras verify the selection.
