Fresh meat, milk, eggs, fruit and vegetables in Belgian supermarkets come predominantly from Belgian farmers. This is even more the case for organic products: 99 % of organic meat in supermarkets comes from Belgian organic farmers.
Local supply
96 % of pork, 92 % of beef and 95 % of chicken meat in Belgian supermarkets comes from Belgian farmers. For milk, this is 98 % and for eggs it is more than 87 %. More than 58 % of all vegetables sold in supermarkets are also grown in Belgium. Apples stand at 66 %, pears even at 91 %.
Even greater is the Belgian supply within the organic range: on average 99 % of organic fresh meat (beef, pork and chicken) in supermarkets is of Belgian origin. For organic milk it is 90 %, for organic eggs it is 96 %. The figures are somewhat lower for some fruit and vegetable categories: for organic apples, for example, the figure is only 48 %.
This is according to a survey conducted by the Comeos trade federation on the eve of the Libramont agricultural fair. At that fair, the federation is organising an event bringing farmers and retail together.
