Monop’, the convenience store concept of French group Casino, has opened its first Belgian branch in the new train station in Mons. Last year, its larger sister chain Monoprix had already opened its first Belgian store, in Waterloo.
“Modernity and mobility”
Eighteen months after Monoprix opened its first Belgian supermarket in the centre of Waterloo, compact convenience concept Monop’ has now also made its Belgian debut. The new shop opened in a futuristic-looking train station, designed by Spanish star architect Santiago Calatrava. The shop design plays nicely into the bright station environment with its high vaulted ceilings.
“We are proud and happy to announce this new phase in Monop’s international development, in an emblematic location that symbolises modernity and mobility”, Vincent Peyronnet of ExtenC, Casino’s subsidiary responsible for international expansion, said on LinkedIn. “This new shop is the perfect embodiment of Monop’s ambition: to offer an urban, practical and quality range that is ever closer to our customers, even when they are on the move.”
