Although you might think your couch will move with you from place to place, it might not always be the right fit. But modular sofas, which are comprised of several individual pieces, can help ensure your furniture goes the distance since they allow for a more customized seating arrangement. Not to mention, you can easily take them apart when you move.

To help you find the best modular sofa that will last you for years—especially if you plan on expanding the sofa later on—the fiber scientists and engineers in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab most recently surveyed more than 5,800 sofa owners to get feedback on favorite brands and the best couches. Using feedback from our panelists, our expertise, and extensive research, we made these recommendations from popular brands. Plus, staffers also tried a few styles first-hand to give us feedback on their experience.

Pros

  • Fully customizable and interchangeable layout
  • Machine-washable covers
  • Can add on pieces later

Cons

  • Some users noted it’s difficult to assemble

Dubbed the Sactional (a combo of the brand’s name and sectional), this sofa can be created to accommodate the needs of your space — whether you prefer an L-shaped couch or not. Lovsac’s unique configuration options range from two seats and four sides to the massive 10 seats and 12 sides to build a sprawling, cozy couch for the ultimate comfort.

Each seat and side is sold as a separate piece, meaning you can get innovative beyond the preselected configurations and add more pieces later if you desire. Everything is completely customizable from the arm style, fill material and cover color and material. Dealing with dirt and stains is easy too as the covers are removable and machine washable.

Our users appreciated the flexibility to change the layout, whether to rearrange their furniture to mix things up or to break up the pieces to use in different rooms as needed. Some noted it was a bit challenging to put together at first, but overall, it’s one of the most functional options on the market.

104" Cloud Sectional Couch

Pros

  • Movable chaise
  • Fast delivery
  • Available in seven colors

Cons

  • Not many configurations

This affordable Amazon sectional comes with free shipping and fast delivery for those with a Prime membership. The corduroy fabric has a cozy look that comes in seven colors to suit most rooms, and it is modular in the sense that you can swap the chaise for either the left or right side.

Despite being hundreds of dollars less than other options on the list, the couch has positive reviews with many owners claiming it’s easy to assemble, comfortable, and offers excellent value for the money. On the downside, some reviewers noted that the back of the couch isn't very high, so despite its sturdy pillows, it's not the most comfortable for taller users.

Cloud Modular 3-Piece Sofa
Credit: RH

Pros

  • Top-quality construction
  • Popular for its soft, cloud-like comfort
  • Quick delivery for some options

Cons

  • Expensive

The RH "Cloud Sofa" took over social media for its sink-in, pillowy feel. Fair warning: It's pricey—but completely worth it, according to the users we surveyed. Each modular piece costs over $1,000, so you can always start out small and add on later. The brand called it "the world's most comfortable sofa," designed to be deep, spacious, and feel like a cloud.

Aside from selecting the pieces, you get to choose everything from the frame style and seat depth to the configuration and the upholstery. The frame is a handcrafted, kiln-dried hardwood, and the couch itself uses a proprietary spring suspension that claims to give you just enough support. Because it’s so popular, you’ll find many of the in-stock fabrics available for you to have at your door in a few days, but you can expect the custom options to have a much longer wait time.

Kova Sofa 120"
Credit: Albany Park

Pros

  • Soft cushions
  • Delivered in boxes for easy setup
  • Free shipping and any-reason returns

Cons

  • May need two people to carry all of the heavy boxes

The Kova collection from Albany Park gives you plenty of configurations from a small two-seat sofa to a grand six-piece U-shape. And since each piece comes in its own box, it's easy to move into an apartment or home—you don't need to do all kinds of measuring to ensure it'll fit up or down stairs or around corners, plus it doesn't require any tools for assembly. The shipping is also fast and free. Just note that delivery is doorstep only, so you may need more than one person to lug all of those heavy boxes up and into an apartment.

The sofa comes in a wide range of fabrics, including synthetic velvets, natural-looking linen, and trendy bouclé in 32 colors—all of which the brand says are stain-resistant and machine washable. Textiles, Paper, and Apparel Lab Associate Director Emma Seymour called the down-alternative pillows "unbelievably soft," noting they cradled her entire body. "The deep cushions and the extra length provided by the ottoman allowed me to fully sprawl out," she said. We also like that you’ll get a 30-day in-home trial and unlimited, any-reason warranty if you're unsure the shape is best for you.

Tatum Modular Corner Sectional with Ottomans
Credit: Interior Define

Pros

  • Modular sectional, sofa and ottoman configurations
  • Many customizable options
  • Plush cushions

Cons

  • Long delivery wait time

Interior Define claims the blocky, relaxed style of the Tatum collection offers "infinite" configurations, and you have more than 125 fabrics to choose from — so the options really do seem endless. You can also customize the leg color, chaise length, and cushion fill, and even add storage within the ottoman. Some reviewers warned that some of the fabrics don’t hold up as well as others, so it might be worth opting for fabrics the brand says are more durable, like the performance velvet or cross-weave.

Regardless of the pieces chosen, the sofa balances a sleek design with a soft feel, with plush cushions that are meant to be sunk into. Note that because these pieces are highly customizable, you may need to wait months to get the exact sofa of your dreams.

Burrow Block Nomad Sofa

On Sale
Block Nomad Sofa
Credit: Burrow

Pros

  • Convenient online ordering process
  • Delivered in separate boxes, so it's easy to carry during setup
  • Includes a built-in USB port

Cons

  • Not rated as comfortable as other models

Burrow is all about convenience, and it's especially great for those who tend to apartment hop. While all of the brand’s sofa offerings are modular, the Nomad is one of its most popular among reviewers. Users loved that it’s easy to set up and has a smaller footprint—though that may make it look undersized in a large room. You have plenty of customizations to choose from, including five fabric colors, six leg colors, three arm styles, two cushion styles, and the option to add a chaise or an ottoman. You can place the chaise in the left, right, or middle seat, in case you need to mix things up.

It should ship within one to three weeks, and there's a 30-day return period. Each piece comes in a separate box, which makes it easy to fit through tight hallways or small door frames. You can also break it down quickly when you plan to move again.

There are neat features like a built-in USB port and an optional “sleep kit,” which includes everything you need to turn your sofa into a bed like a memory foam topper and a fitted sheet that fits over three cushions. Still, while the minimalist aesthetic is pleasing, some noted it's still not the most comfortable couch they’ve owned.

Holt Modular Sectional
Credit: Joybird

Pros

  • 80+ fabrics and colors to choose from
  • Modern aesthetic
  • Easy online shopping platform

Cons

  • Some users said they wished it was softer

Depending on the configuration you choose, the Joybird Holt with its modern aesthetic allows you to truly choose a sofa that will match your personality and style. You’ll find more than 80 fabrics and color options, including velvet, microfiber, and chenille in shades of neutrals, blues, rose, teals, and yellows. It has 10 modular options to choose from, including one with additional storage built underneath the sectional cushion. The cushions are also ideal for hunkering down on movie nights.

Note that the customization will take longer to ship, but the most popular fabric options are also in stock for faster shipping. It has a 90-day return period, which is longer than most furniture companies, though you're responsible for shipping the return on your own. Our reviewers were mixed on how plush and durable the couch is, but they all agree it’s quite comfortable. They also noted how wonderful the customer service is from the online-only company.

Harmony 2-Piece Chaise Sectional
Credit: West Elm

Pros

  • Super soft
  • Fully customizable to fit your space
  • Extra-deep seat

Cons

  • A few users had concerns around long-term durability

With a similar style to the RH Cloud Sofa, the Harmony collection from West Elm earns points for supreme comfort at a fraction of the cost. Similarly, it has extra-deep seats that are made to sink into, and the included cushions are just as comfy. Aside from the classic two-seat sofa, there are seemingly endless sectional options. You can sift through two-seaters, chaises, corner pieces, and more to create a truly custom model to fit your home.

You also pick your upholstery, with dozens of colors and fabrics to choose from to match your interior. Setting up your chosen design is easy too, as components click together with metal clips on the sides. Although some reviewers noted it doesn’t hold up perfectly over time, most agreed it was quite durable. Plus, you can’t beat the comfort.

Best Reclining

La-Z-Boy Ava Sectional

Ava Sectional
Credit: La-Z-Boy

Pros

  • Built-in recliner for lounging
  • Many locations to try out in-store

Cons

  • Limited specs and material info listed on website, which can make online ordering harder

If you want a configurable sofa that also offers some extra relaxation, this La-Z-Boy is a popular option. You can customize the sectional by changing the shape and number of seats within the configuration that has a built-in recliner seat on one end that can open with a manual latch or power release. Designing it online can be a little tricky, but you can make it super long, which is ideal for an entertainment room with a casual look and feel. Even the arms are cushioned so you can rest your head while you watch TV.

There are also almost 400 (!) color and print options for the upholstery that you can match with your decor. Our users loved these casual recliners, particularly the comfort and look of them. The brand is also known for great customer service, and you can even try it IRL at one of the many locations throughout the U.S.

KIVIK Sofa with Chaise
Credit: IKEA

Pros

  • Can add on pieces over time
  • Affordable
  • Twin sleeper chair option

Cons

  • Can be tricky to put together

IKEA is known for its affordable options, and the brand's KIVIK is no exception. It's ideal if you want something small at first and then grow your couch over time. You can start with a two-seat or sectional, and add on a chaise or even a sleeper seat that pulls out to a Twin-sized bed. You also have five bold color options to choose from. The medium firm foam is a little hard at first but sinks in over time, according to reviewers.

The roomy seats make it good for lounging, and the wide armrests allow you to rest things like a cellphone or a tray for some additional multipurpose usage. Like most IKEA furniture, it can be a bit of a puzzle to build, but overall, reviewers were impressed by the look, quality, and number of options.

How we choose the best modular sofas

line break

In our most recent sofa evaluations, our scientists and engineers researched sofas from more than 50 stores and brands, then surveyed more than 5,800 people on our consumer tester panel to get in-depth feedback on the couches they already own. Respondents answered a series of open-ended questions, plus scored their furniture based on everything from ease of ordering, delivery, and setup, comfort, support, and durability over time.

Some of our staffers also tried a handful of newer brands with less user feedback to make sure both the shopping and in-home experience were exceptional.

What to look for when buying a modular sofa

double line break

Modular sofas vary in configurations and styles, but here are the best things to keep in mind while shopping.

✔️ Configurations: Measure your space and determine the number of seats you can fit before you start shopping for a modular sofa. While most modular options will come in boxes, it’s important to measure your door frame so there are no surprises on delivery day. You can always expand your modular couch later on, but think about what pieces you want. Most options include seats, removable sides, corner pieces, chaises, and ottomans, as well as hidden storage and even sleeper sofas.

✔️ Frame: It can be tricky to find specifics, depending on the site, but most sofa frames are made out of wood, which is considered durable. Although expensive, kiln-dried hardwood is of even better quality as the wood goes through a finishing process to help make it stronger and prevent warping. Cheaper couches will use particleboard, which is a wood blend that is not as durable.

✔️ Material: With customizable pieces, it’s especially important to consider the material when you're overwhelmed with pretty options. Some upholstery is easier to clean or better suited for pets, which can affect the softness and longevity of the piece. If you do have messy pets or younger kids, opt for stain-resistant and durable options like polyester. Many brands also offer performance fabrics, which are designed to be durable, stain-resistant, and easy to clean. While pricey, leather is the most durable over time and has a luxurious look, but it's harder to clean and may get scratches. In the middle of fussiness are natural fibers like cotton and linen, which have a beautiful appearance but may be less durable for everyday use. Luckily, most brands will send you a free sample swatch of whatever you have your eye on, so you can determine which material is best for you and if the color is right.

✔️ Fill: Seat cushions are typically filled with a firm foam that's wrapped in a softer layer. If you want something more plush and cloud-like, a down or down-blend cushion fill is best. Polyester, which is more affordable, may be a little stiffer than the down or down blends, which are typically plusher. Also, double-check that the foam is free of flame retardants that can be endocrine disruptors, which are chemicals that have been linked to negative effects on hormones, particularly in children and pregnant people, according to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Most sofas will have a clear label explaining whether or not a flame retardant was added.

✔️ Cost: A sofa is a major investment, and modular sofas are typically priced by the number of pieces you choose. Generally, a modular will cost between $1,000 and $10,000, depending on the number of pieces, materials, delivery cost, and brand. The least expensive option we found was around $700, but it offered the least amount of customization. Note that sofas with more custom options are generally not eligible for returns and can take longer to ship.

What is the difference between modular and sectional sofas?

double line break

A modular couch is made up of individual pieces rearranged in multiple configurations, which can also include a sectional.

Traditional sectional sofas come in connected, pre-determined sections and may only come in two pieces that can not be reconfigured. Aside from being able to be shaped as loveseats, pods, and U-shaped sectionals, modular sofas offer greater flexibility, allowing owners to mix up the configurations later on if they wish.

Are there any cons to modular sofas?

double line break

While a modular sofa is a fantastic choice for someone who lives in an apartment or wants furniture with extra flexibility, there are a few things that make them unideal for some:

  • Modules can separate. If not clicked in properly, modular pieces can separate, which can be frustrating to put back together.
  • They can be expensive. Thanks to their added functionality, modular sofas can have a higher price tag than their fixed sofa counterparts.
  • There are long lead times. Multiple components used in multiple configurations means that if one of the options isn't available, you may have to wait longer for delivery. This is especially true if you're getting a more customized option.
  • It can be overwhelming: A lot of configurations means a ton of choices. If you're someone who gets overwhelmed with the idea of deciding whether a three-piece L-shape or six-piece U-shape is better, it may be best to stick with fixed furniture you can't change over time.

Are modular sofas worth it?

double line break

If you have a large family (or a growing one!), a modular sofa can be completely worth it. With the ability to shape a couch to a large living room for entertaining, these adaptable furniture pieces can be added to over time for the ultimate lounging spot. You can choose more unique designs, such as U-shaped or pod-like configurations that can make use of corner spaces and maximize every inch of your living room. Additionally, modular sofas are a great option for apartment dwellers because they come in pieces that can be taken apart to fit tight hallways or door frames.
