Shopify merchants can now also sell on TikTok

General28 October, 2020

Soon, shopping will also be possible on TikTok: the popular video app will join forces with Shopify so that nearly one million retailers can offer their products directly to users of the social network.

Selling by video

The extremely popular TikTok will soon also become a shopping destination. Users will soon be able to buy products directly in the app, thanks to a new partnership with webshop provider Shopify. Around a million retailers and brands will be able to advertise and engage in social commerce via TikTok: they will be able to create a “TikTok for Business” account and post videos with “shoppable ads“, writes Charged Retail.

Traders can choose to target a particular audience in the app, for example based on gender, age, behaviour and video categories. They will also be able to track how the video campaign is performing and get data on user behaviour: retailers will be informed about who is surfing to their page, placing items in the shopping cart, ordering via the app and so on.

The service is already starting in the US, and will also be coming to Europe and Asia early next year. TikTok has been investigating ways to get a foothold in retail outside China for some time now, but US President Trump’s attempts to ban the platform in the US have made that difficult so far. Nevertheless, the app is able to appeal to hundreds of thousands of young Gen Z consumers, who, according to the company, would like to stay informed about their favourite brands. Earlier this week, WhatsApp also announced steps towards integrated e-commerce.
