Kinder Surprise eggs linked to European salmonella outbreak

Food5 April, 2022

Following an outbreak of salmonella infections, Kinder Suprise eggs are being withdrawn from the market in several European countries as a precaution. The products originate from a Belgian Ferrero factory.

Targeted checks

Some 125 salmonella infections have already been linked to eating Kinder Surprise chocolate products from the factory in Arlon: there may be 63 cases in the United Kingdom, 21 in France, 16 in Belgium, 10 in Ireland, 4 in Sweden and at least 2 in the Netherlands.

Salmonellosis is a common infection that in most cases heals without treatment, but in case of serious symptoms it is advisable to consult a doctor. Whether Ferrero’s chocolate eggs are indeed the cause of the infections is still under investigation. A recall action will follow for four products: Kinder Surprise 20 grams and 3 x 20 grams with an expiry date between 11 July and 7 October 2022; Kinder Surprise Maxi with an expiry date between 10 August and 10 September 2022; Schoko-Bons with an expiry date between 10 August and 10 September 2022; and Kinder Mini Eggs with an expiry date between 10 August and 10 September 2022.
