If you're giving your mom a robe this holiday season, make it a good one.

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.
I've seen countless sitcoms joking about the "bad mom gift" of a bathrobe or matching pajamas—SNL even did a skit about it. While I may have laughed along back when I was younger, I now fully understand the enamoration with bathrobes (and with fancy pajamas too!). So, this is my formal PSA that bathrobes are a great holiday present, as long as you pick a high-quality, soft, luxe-feeling robe or even personalize it with an embroidered monogram.
To find the best bathrobes for gift-giving to loved ones or yourself, our pros in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab reviewed the materials, construction, colors, sizes, and style of tons of robes from popular brands. We also enlisted consumer testers and staff members to give us feedback on the robes. Our experts compared data from how different materials performed in our bath towel tests, and we considered online reviews. Ahead, find the best bathrobes to wear after a shower, while you do your hair and makeup, or when you need something cozy for lounging around the house.

Pros
Stylish exterior and cozy interior
Durable material
Optional monogram makes it a nice gift
Cons
May be too warm and thick for some people
WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Those who want a high-quality robe that's warm but looks luxurious
WHY WE LOVE IT: This robe combines two robe types we love: waffle weave and terrycloth. The exterior waffle weave is a blend of cotton and synthetic fibers that create a stylish, high-end appearance. The terrycloth lining is made with 100% Turkish cotton, which is absorbent yet soft. One of our consumer testers noted that while the robe was "very, very absorbent," it didn't wipe any lotions or oils off her skin.
In our Textiles Lab tests, our fiber scientists were impressed with the robe's quality construction and smooth interior—so much so that it was a 2025 Good Housekeeping Bath Awards winner. There are roomy pockets and four belt loops around the waist, with the option to wear it on a lower or higher spot along your torso (a feature that came in handy for a 5'1 tester).
Not only does this robe look luxurious, but it also feels luxurious. “The waffle weave on the outside makes it look light and airy, while the inside layer is made of terrycloth, which kept me warm," one of our consumer testers said. Another one of our consumer testers said, "The robe was very comfortable, stylish, and felt luxurious."
The "warm, cozy, and soft" interior—as described by one of our consumer testers—makes this robe a great pick for a holiday gift for the cold winter season. Just keep in mind that it may be a bit too warm and heavy for the summer or for some people. "If you're someone of a smaller stature, or especially if you run hot, this could be a problem for you," another consumer tester shared.
You can even get the robe monogrammed on the upper left side for an additional charge, which is a great personal touch for a holiday gift.

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Someone on a budget looking for a soft, cozy robe
WHY WE LOVE IT: While most of the featured robes on this list are at least $100, this affordable robe from Lacoste starts at around $40. When our fiber scientists in the Textiles Lab tested Lacoste towels, we found them to be both soft and absorbent. Made with 100% cotton terry, the materials of the brand's towels and robe are the same, so we expect this robe to feel just as soft and cozy on your skin. This bathrobe will have a similar feel to your towels, so it's a great robe to slip into after a shower.
We also love the detailing on the collar, two large front pockets, the easy hanging tab in the back, and the fact that it comes in eight colors. The tricky thing is that it only comes in one size.
"The most perfect robe. My fiancé and I both have [one] and can’t believe we ever lived without! Super comfortable!" wrote Tiffany, a customer on Amazon, who even purchased a third robe as a Christmas grab-bag gift, and said, "It was a hit!"
Most bathrobes go past your knees, while this style is cropped just above the knee, ideal for petite builds or those who overheat easily. "This robe is exceptionally nice for our Florida climate; not too light, not too heavy," wrote one Amazon reviewer.

Pros
Lightweight and breathable, according to our testers
Nine color options
Soft right out of the packaging
Cons
Sizing can be tricky
WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Those who run hot or want a breathable robe suitable for all seasons of the year
WHY WE LOVE IT: Another 2025 GH Bath Awards winner, this bathrobe has a waffle weave texture both on the exterior and interior. With zero fuzziness and no terry cloth material, this robe feels ultra-light and breathable, making it a great choice for year-round use and for those who overheat easily. "It's light and breathable, perfect for when I’m drying my hair or putting on makeup after a hot shower," said one of our consumer testers. Another GH tester said, "The waffle fabric feels light and airy. It's fairly soft and flexible."
Don't get it twisted: This robe is still incredibly soft. It's made from 100% Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)-certified organic cotton, which is not only sustainable, but super soft. Coyuchi even pre-tumbles the fabric to ensure it's soft right out of the packaging, plus it comes in nine colors.
Our consumer testers gave this robe perfect or near-perfect ratings across every category, including comfort, softness, breathability, absorption, and more. "Getting to put this on after taking a shower gave the entire experience a spa-like quality,” said one tester," one of our testers shared. Just keep in mind that this is a unisex robe, so you may want to size down if you're on the smaller side or have short limbs, or size up if you're on the taller end, as the sleeves were a bit too long for one of our shorter testers and too short for a taller tester.

Pros
Extremely absorbent
Cozy to wear
Pairs perfectly with the brand's top tested towels
Cons
Some shrinkage after laundering
WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Homebodies who want a super plush, cozy robe
WHY WE LOVE IT: Our fiber scientists in the Textiles Lab were impressed with Brooklinen's Super Plush Towels, which were our pick for the best heavyweight bath towels. So, we expected the brand's robe to be just as great, especially since it's made with the same cotton terrycloth. This plush robe proved to be extremely absorbent, and our consumer testers gave it nearly perfect softness scores. However, the material did show a bit of shrinkage and wear after laundering.
A former GH staffer who tried this robe said she liked the length because it "didn't drag on the floor." She also called it "great for the colder months," and said she wore it "while doing my makeup or lounging around the house" (sounds cozy to us!). Plus, she reported that this robe stayed closed when tied, so feel free to wear it over clothes when you're cold, but you're safe to wear it straight out of the shower as well. It's a nice gift for someone who likes to relax at home wearing something cozy.

Pros
Ultimate warmth
Full length
Monogram only costs $8 extra
Wide range of sizes
Cons
May be too thick and heavy for some people
WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Those who tend to run cold
WHY WE LOVE IT: This plush bathrobe from L.L. Bean is great for cold weather or as a wintertime gift because it's made with a warm, fleece material, and it's full-length, so you are totally covered. "Cozy, plush robe [that]is perfect for fall and winter mornings," said an online reviewer, Elizabeth H. Still, fleece is a very smooth, heavy, and warm material, which can be too much for some folks. "I found the fleece to be a little thicker than I'd like and also less flexible or less pliable than I like," wrote Jillian, an online reviewer.
We also love that this robe has a large size range with standard, petite, and plus-size options. One online reviewer, KadyQ, wrote that she is 5'9, 137lbs, and has a large bust, and a medium was the ideal size for her. She called it "just the right amount of oversized and looks good tied," and reported that it came out "looking brand new" after laundering it.
Available in six colors and with an optional monogram (for an additional $8), this robe is an impressive gift for the holidays or for someone with a birthday this winter (a.k.a. me, if anyone's wondering what's on my birthday list).

Pros
Super soft silk material
Six color options
Luxurious appearance
Lightweight
Cons
Dry cleaning recommended
Runs a bit small
WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Those who like to "dress up" to do their makeup, hair, or self-care routines
WHY WE LOVE IT: When you're getting ready, there's nothing worse than breaking out into a sweat from blow-drying your hair or dropping makeup onto your clothes. That's where a lightweight, stylish robe comes in handy. Birnur K. Aral, Ph.D. and former director of the Beauty Lab, tried this robe and said she liked it for when she was doing her hair or makeup.
Our fiber scientists loved the Fisher’s Finery Silk Pillowcase, which they rated as the best overall silk pillowcase due to its super soft material. This robe uses the same luxe silk fabric, which gives it a soft (but not fuzzy or warm) feel and its sheen is elegant and rich looking, making it an indulgent gift for girlfriends, wives, or fiancées. Available in six colors and five sizes, you may want to size up because Aral found it to run a bit tight.
Note that it’s recommended to wash this robe by hand or dry clean, but it comes with a mesh wash bag if you would like to machine wash using the gentle cycle.

Pros
Quilted material
Chic design
Extremely warm
Cons
Expensive
Takes up a lot of space
WHO IT'S BEST FOR: The person who's always cold or dog owners
WHY WE LOVE IT: Whether you and your partner are constantly debating over the temperature in your home, or you know someone who's chilly all the time, this is a fitting gift for them or yourself. It's essentially a thick, plush quilt blanket in robe form, so you can securely walk around feeling extra cozy and warm.
In our Textiles Lab evaluations, our experts were blown away by the ingenious design and appearance of this robe, though we admit it is expensive. It's toasty, yet it still looks chic with its plush quilted fabric and convenient patch pockets. "[It] feels like you are wearing a comforter," said Jillian Sollazzo, a GH staffer. She also called it the "perfect work-from-home robe."
We also love that this robe is good for going outside real quick, like taking out the trash or letting your dog into the yard—allowing you to stay warm and look presentable.
Sollazzo noted that its thick material and oversized design made it take up a decent amount of closet space when not in use, so it may not be ideal for someone living in a tiny apartment. And with gender-neutral sizing, there are only two size options: standard and a smaller version.
NOTE: Most colors of this robe are out of stock, but some are available for pre-order at the time of writing. Since this product doesn't stay in stock for long, it's best to pre-order ahead of the holiday season if you want to gift it to someone. You can check here to see all the OFFHOURS Homecoats that are available for pre-order.

Pros
Cotton flannel fabric
Lightweight and warm
Monogram is just $8 extra
Cons
Some reviewers noted that the fabric is thinner
WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Someone who loves flannel shirts or holiday-esque attire
WHY WE LOVE IT: I don't know about you, but when I think of flannel, I think of fall plaids and cozy holiday pajamas. This cotton flannel robe makes for a fun holiday gift (or an even better autumn birthday gift so they can wear it all December long).
"L.L. Bean is known for its high-quality, super soft flannel," says Emma Seymour, associate director of the Textiles Lab. The brand's flannel sheets were incredibly soft in our tests, but they shrunk a bit after laundering, so be sure to size up or air-dry your robe. With five different shades of plaid (including a red, green, and yellow one that's perfect for Christmas), we love that this robe is available in regular, petite, and plus sizes. You can add a monogram is just $8 extra.
Some online reviewers wished this robe was thicker, but many felt the opposite. One customer, Cindy, wrote that it was "lightweight but still provides warmth."

Pros

Testers loved the billowy sleeves
Machine washable
Stays securely closed
Cons
Pricey
WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Those with a taste for the finer things in life
WHY WE LOVE IT: A silk robe is the perfect way to add a bit of luxury to your self-care day. The belt of silk robes can sometimes come undone, and the robe itself often opens due to its slippery material, but this 100% silk robe has an interior tie to keep it secure, a clever touch that's not usually seen with silk robes.
Available in four shades from neutrals to bold hues, our analysts in the Textiles Lab loved that this robe cinches at the wrists to create chic, billowy sleeves. "The fit is incredibly flattering," said Claire Tweedie, one of our consumer testers. "The material drapes nicely but does not look bulky or shapeless."
Although this pick is a bit pricier than others on the list, it's machine washable for easy care, which is another rare feature of silk robes. "The material itself is soft and lightweight without feeling too thin," shared Tweedie who said this robe is perfect for wearing in the summer or during breakfast (especially if you wake up cold from the AC!). Overall, this robe looks and feels luxurious.

Pros
100% organic long stable cotton
Cozy long length
Customized embroidery for an additional charge
Cons
Costs around $200 with added personalization
WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Tall folks or anyone who wants to feel entirely wrapped up
WHY WE LOVE IT: "This fluffy, cozy robe from Weezie is made with 100% organic long-staple cotton for a super soft feel," Seymour says. The extended length is perfect for anyone who is tall or has a bigger body frame, but even shorter folks can wear it, too (you'll just feel extra cozy and snuggled up in this long robe that may reach a bit above the ankles on most people). However, Nicole Papantoniou, director of our Kitchen Appliances Lab, noted that the robe felt hot and heavy. So, this robe is best for the colder winter season.
This robe also has a cute piped edge for a pop of color, the option to customize it with embroidery for an additional charge, and four color options. Papantoniou also said she "especially liked that the belt was attached so you can't lose it and it doesn't move around—so smart!"

Pros
100% cotton
Soft, all-season fabric
High marks for comfort and breathability
Cons
Testers rated it as less absorbent
WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Someone who wants a year-round robe
WHY WE LOVE IT: Our Lab tests have revealed Parachute’s towels and sheets as top performers time and time again. "Made of 100% long-staple Turkish two-ply cotton gauze, this bathrobe uses fabric designed to be ultra-soft and luxurious," Seymour says.
Our staffers loved how breathable the robe feels without looking see-through, but found it not to be absorbent. We appreciate that this breezy style can be worn every season, as it’s not too hot or too cool. It's also available in nine colors, including tons of earth tones like evergreen and brown.

How we choose the best bathrobes for women

To find the best bathrobes for women, our fiber scientists and experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab reviewed specs of each robe on this list. This included:
✔️ Checking that it was made with top-performing materials: We considered data from how materials of bath towels performed in our Lab tests, including evaluating bath towels for absorbency, shrinkage, softness, and drying time. We then used that data to help inform our picks for the best bathrobes made with the same material.
✔️ Evaluating the construction of the robe: We factored in the length, the size of the pockets, and how the belt tied around the robe.
✔️ Considering the style: No one wants an ugly robe, so we also checked the color or pattern options, assessed its appearance, and noted if the brand offered any embroidery or monogram personalization options.
✔️ Enlisted consumer testers and staffers: Dozens of our consumer testers, product analysts, and editors tried these robes on at home to provide feedback on factors like softness, breathability, comfort, appearance, and functionality.
✔️ Checking online reviews: We also considered online reviews of highly rated robes from brands we know and trust.
What to look for when shopping for the best bathrobes for women

✔️ Use: Before deciding which style of robe to buy, think about how you plan to wear the robe. Lightweight styles made from cotton or linen are best for summer months, while thicker, fluffier robes are better suited for the winter. For robes to wear after the shower, opt for absorbent styles made from cotton terrycloth or waffle weaves.
✔️ Fabric: Robes are available in a variety of materials and weaves to suit different preferences. GH fiber scientists explain what the key differences between the most common bathrobe fabrics are:
- Terrycloth, the most traditional fabric for bathrobes, is usually made of 100% cotton woven with many protruding loops of thread to absorb water easily, so it's ideal for a robe you want to wear after the shower.
- Waffle weave uses a distinct pattern that creates square or diamond shapes. It's also usually 100% cotton and is a popular material for towels, but it is lighter weight and less absorbent compared to terrycloth.
- Linen is a natural material made from the flax plant. It's known for its lightweight breathable feel, but it is generally not as soft.
- Fleece is the fuzziest fabric made from synthetic materials like polyester—ideal for ultimate coziness when already dry.
- Flannel is a woven fabric, usually 100% cotton, with a napped, brushed finish on at least one side. It's perfect for cold weather and especially popular around the holidays.
- Silk is a natural material with a super smooth feel. Silk robes are great for dressing robes to wear while getting ready.
✔️ Sizing: Most robes are available in a variety of sizes. Check the size chart to confirm if the sizing is women's, men's, or gender neutral. Testers generally chose robes in their standard sizing, with a few preferring to go up a size for a roomier fit.
